The Embarcadero, San Francisco

The Embarcadero stretches along San Francisco's eastern waterfront from the Bay Bridge to Fisherman's Wharf, a wide, open promenade with the Bay Bridge as its centrepiece and the city skyline rising immediately behind it. Pier 7, the longest public pier on the waterfront, extends directly into the bay and frames one of the most dramatic views in the city: the Bay Bridge lit at dusk, the water reflecting the lights of the East Bay, and the open sky above. Unlike the western waterfront, the Embarcadero offers an urban romance; the energy of the Ferry Building, the glow of the bridge, and the quiet at the end of a pier far out over the water.

Venue Details

Best Time

Sunset and early evening. The Bay Bridge illuminates at dusk and the light on the water is extraordinary; weekday evenings are quieter than weekends

Parking

Embarcadero Center garages nearby; street parking along the Embarcadero on evenings and weekends

Planning Tip

Pier 7 is public and sees foot traffic throughout the day, but the far end of the pier, furthest from the street, is typically quieter, especially on weekday evenings. Arriving 45–60 minutes before sunset allows the setup to be ready as the light turns golden and the bridge begins to glow. The Ferry Building's restaurants and the waterfront bars make it effortless to transition straight from the proposal to a celebration dinner.
